Local youth tennis tournament set for Aug. 13-14
The second annual 10-and-under, 12-and-under Fun Youth Tennis Tournament will be held Aug. 13 and 14 at the Somerset High School courts (at Hopkins Elementary).
The singles-only event targets youth tennis players in the Lake Cumberland Tennis Association area, which includes Pulaski, Russell, Lincoln, McCreary, Wayne, and Rockcastle counties.
Registration deadline is Aug. 9.
This tournament is designed for beginners, and many participants will be experiencing tournament play for the first time. We will have an official at each court to help players avoid confusion and keep the match moving, but players should already know the basics of keeping score. Players need also to have attended a clinic or had at least some experience with tennis. We want to simulate a USTA real-tournament environment, so coaching by parents or others during the match will not be allowed.
The 10-and-under division (must be 8, 9, or 10 — no older than 10 on Aug. 14) players will use orange balls (made especially for 10-and-under players) and play on a 60-foot court (also designed for 10-and-under players).
Players in the 12-and-under division (must be no older than 12 on Aug. 14) will use green dot balls (made especially for 12 and under) and full-sized courts.
Matches are two sets to four games, no-ad scoring, with a 7-point tiebreak in the case of split sets. All players are guaranteed at least two matches. Depending on turnout, the format will either be round-robin or double elimination.
Also depending on the number of participants, the tournament may or may not be co-ed. A determination will be made once all have registered.
Registration deadline: 9 p.m. Aug. 9. Playing times will be posted Aug. 11. Players need to be available to play anytime between the hours of 6 and 8:45 p.m. Aug 13 and Aug. 14. It is expected that the tournament will conclude on Aug. 14, but in case of rain or extended play due to numbers, the tournament will resume Aug. 20 and 21, same time.
Please arrive for the first match 15 minutes early to register and sign a liability waiver.
The entry fee of $10 which will go toward purchasing awards and tournament supplies. Any leftover proceeds will go to the LCTA.
